As an alternative to Book Collector, I can suggest All My Books.

I use Now Reading on my blog to keep track of books I'm currently reading, but you could just enter your whole library into it. It's a wordpress plugin and ties into amazon to lookup ISBN's and pull bookcover images.

Yes, I believe what you need to do is upload the photo to your computer and then to the software. I think you can also upload directly from a website, but I have found it easiest to save to my computer and then to program.

Actually my dad owned a comic book store so yes I did have quite the collection.

So can you upload a photo for your collection if it does not have one?

I have owned only one comic book in my life. It was a first edition Planet Terry that was bought for me as a joke. I think I might still have it somewhere.

BTW Jason, were you able to get all of your comic books out of your mom's basement to your room in the attic? LOL :)

I agree that library thing can do the same for the books, but the bonus to Book Collector, in my estimation, is that you can export all the information such that it can be available on any computer anywhere. Also, you can catalogue not only books, but cd's mp3's, comic books, and pictures as well depending on what it is you are wanting to organize.

I don't know that you could go wrong either way.

this software sounds just like the web app called Library Thing, which can be found on librarything.com. you can catalog 200 books fro free (which i quickly did), then it is a lifetime, unlimited entry subscription for $20. it operates exactly as the software just described, using the same sources and methods, as well as the scanner.
once the book is entered into your library, it automatically finds the picture of the cover (if one is available, otherwise it inserts a generic pic), library of congress info, summary of the book, etc. you can add your own tags and it has some great community and profile features. once you join, you can look at "famous" libraries, like Thomas Jefferson's. also, it will tell you with whom in the community you share books with.
it is a cheap and in my mind equivalent option to more expensive software, only this program does not need to be downloaded and can be accessed from any computer!

For Mac Users, an app called Booxter has the same functionality. It can scan barcodes from your built-in iSight camera or any other firewire/USB camera, then retrieve the book's info from Amazon.com. It's a little more expensive at $50 than what Terry is discussing above, but it's a great app. Also integrates with Spotlight so your everything in your book index is searchable from anywhere on your computer.

It will also catalog music, movie and other stuff. Developer's Website: http://www.deepprose.com/

Mac users may want to try Delicious Library.
It has a great interface and uses your Mac's built in iSight camera.

I use LibraryThing myself, which has a nice advantage of being cheaper (free for up to 200 books, or $10/year, or $25/lifetime), plus having "community" features. (See book recommendations based on library overlap, etc.)
